Immunoglobulin Y: Targeted Antimicrobials for Liver Disease

Both IgG (mammalian) and IgY (avian) antibodies serve as key immunoglobulins responsible for pathogen neutralization and are the most abundantly produced antibodies in their respective species. Unlike IgG, IgY does not activate the mammalian complement system or interact with immune cells via Fc receptors, reducing the risk of unintended immune activation.

Unlike monoclonal IgG therapies that target a single epitope, polyclonal IgY antibodies engage multiple sites across a pathogen’s surface. This multi-epitope recognition strengthens neutralization and reduces the risk of microbial escape mutations, making IgY well-suited for repeated dosing and long-term therapeutic use.
